How To Get on First Page of Google Search for Free

Nowadays, bloggers, webmasters, small business owners and even large corporations need to have online presence to succeed.

However, advertising is too expensive for those who are just getting started so they need an alternative way to get clients or website visitors.

Luckily, everyone has a chance to be seen in the first page of Google Search without paying, and that’s through Search Engine Optimization or SEO.

There’s no better way of getting free quality traffic to your website than through organic search which almost guarantees success.

Some may think that SEO is too technical for them, but believe me, as long as you can use a computer, you will do just fine.

Let me walk you through how your website or business can be seen in the first page of Google Search for free.

Note: I’m assuming that your website has already been submitted and indexed by Google Search. If not, there’s an easy step by step guide through this help article.

1. Research your target keywords

Before optimizing your website, it is a must that you know what keyword/s you wish to rank on.

There are many free keyword research tools online that can help you find profitable keywords such as Google Planner, Google Trend, Keyword Sheeter, Keyword Surfer, Keyworddit and more.

Most of us already have an idea what keywords to target before we even start building our website/blog, but for those who doesn’t have a keyword in mind yet, I suggest to read Rachel Leist’s in-depth explanation how to do keyword research and why it’s critical to your success.

2. Focus on long-tail keywords

If your main goal is to rank on a competitive keyword like Best Sneakers, Make Money Online, SEO Guide, etc. I want you to think twice and do more research before proceeding.

I do not recommend for anyone to target such popular / competitive keywords immediately. It’s almost a guarantee that you will waste your time and money competing with the leading brand and top bloggers without getting any result.

Choosing your target keywords is critical to your success, you don’t want to waste all your time and effort for something that will not yield the outcome you desire.

To avoid corporations, leading brands and top bloggers who are competing on popular keywords, you should “always” start and focus on targeting the long-tail keywords.

Examples are Top Trendy Sneakers for Women 2020 or Cheap Jordan Sneakers for Men Online.

By adding couple of descriptive keywords, you’re avoiding the giants in your niche, and since these are less competitive it’s way easier and quicker for you to rank in the first page of Google Search.

It’s true that you will get less traffic, but if you can dominate several long-tail keywords, you will have enough traffic to achieve your desired goal.

There are many other advantages why should go after the unpopular keywords and here’s a couple of those:

  • Matt Bailey of Search Engine Guide said that those corporations who are only targeting competitive keywords might be missing most of their markets.
  • Amazon is generating 57% of their sales from those keywords outside of the “popular” terms.
  • Neil Patel’s high converting visitors are coming from long-tail keywords.

If you’re still wondering how your business will succeed or how your website will rank for keywords…

Go get those long-tail keywords!!

3. Optimize the Title tags

Once you have decided which long-tail keyword to target, start optimizing the title of your page to match it.

Title tag is one of the most important on-page SEO factors because Google is using it to identify what’s the content of your page.

Example, if my target keyword is Top Sneakers for Women I can create a post/page with the title Review of 15 Top Sneakers for Women 2020.

This is a descriptive title which accurately targets my preferred audience and at the same time telling Google that my content is all about Top Sneakers for Women.

The point is simple, your target keywords must be in the title.

4. Optimize Header or H tags

Just like the Title tag, Header tags are equally important to your on-page SEO. These tags will also send signal to Google what’s the context of your page.

H tags give structure to your page and provide context to Search Engines and readers.

While it’s a good practice to add your target keywords in the H1, you must avoid keyword stuffing. What I mean by this is, you have the same exact keywords in H1, H2, H3 up to H6 which doesn’t look natural.

If Google thinks that you’re just stuffing keywords to your tags and content for the sake of ranking, they might penalize your website instead.

I suggest to add your target keywords in the H1, but do not add in anymore in the H2-H6 to avoid keyword stuffing. Create more natural h tags relevant to your topic to avoid getting flagged by Google.

You can check this Search Engine Journal’s article by Amelia Willson how to use H tags for more information.

5. Use LSI keywords

Instead of repeatedly adding the exact same keywords which doesn’t look natural, I suggest to add Latent Semantic Indexing keywords or LSI instead.

LSI keywords are words and phrases with a high degree of correlation to your target topic. Google’s algorithm uses them to help determine content quality and relevance to the search term.

Here are few examples how to use them.

Example Target Keyword: Top Cheap Sneakers 2020

  • This basketball shoe is affordable and can easily become one of the best sneakers of all time.
  • It should be included as one of the top sneakers of the decade.
  • This is also one of the best cheap sneakers online.

LSI keywords can be found under the ‘Searches related” at the bottom of Google Search result and the “Keyword suggestions” during the actual search.

Why you must do this?

Doing this will allow your page to rank on those keywords as well, which means that your single post can rank on several long-tail keywords just by adding LSI.

In addition, you will avoid getting flagged by Google due to keyword stuffing so this is a win-win for you.

6. Create Outbound links

Outbound links are links in your page which redirect to another website. Many are reluctant to give outbound links because they think that it will only benefit the receiver.

However, this is also beneficial to you if you’re linking out to relevant and authoritative websites. It tells Google that your page is relevant to those pages and borrows their credibility.

So don’t hesitate to link out to those with domain authority relevant to your niche.

7. Create Backlinks

Backlinks are links from other websites going to your own page.

This is one of the most important SEO ranking factors and if you can get/create high quality backlinks,it will be easier for your website to dominate long-tail keywords and rank in Google Search.

Basically, all links going to your website are backlinks, but not all of them are beneficial. Links coming from low quality pages or synthetically obtained links may hurt your page rank instead of helping.

In addition, buying backlink services may cause irreversible penalty from Google so be very careful when implementing your backlink building strategy.
